The House of Mirth as a poorly-played Choose Your Own Adventure game. I am going to make an icon. It will say "C. Become a milliner" and I will use it on every entry about how I have made a poor choice to remind myself that at least I am not Lily Bart.

Oh god, The House of Mirth. We watched the movie my senior year of high school and I just kept waiting for her to kill herself and thinking that she had, and then the movie kept going, and that happened like three times! And then I had to argue with the other 11 people in my class, 10 of whom were boys, about how systemic oppression meant that she had no other opportunities, she couldn't just 'leave'.

I still haven't finished the book.

My junior year of high school I read nearly everything Wharton wrote for a school project. And MAN did I loath Lily. I spent the entire book wanting to force her to make different decisions. Not as much as I loathed Ethan Frome's decision making, but close. I adore Wharton, but I like the short stories and the novellas so much better than the novels. Because the plot of the average short story or novella is "people are catty and snide and close on a snarky note." And the plot of the average novel is "protagonist destroys life through poor decision-making."

I never watched the movie.

I read and liked The Age of Innocence, but I'm not sure I've read anything else of hers, actually.
