I think it's probably a fun movie even without the history, but it's definitely a movie about being nostalgic about the Muppets, so I don't know how engaging it would have been if I didn't share Jason Siegel's nostalgia. It is really the most meta and self-insert of premises--he's nostalgic about the Muppets and then he meets them and has to help them revive the franchise to save their legacy. It is a movie where the climax is that the characters host a telethon with the schick from their old tv show. They have challenges like "where we are going to find a celebrity guest?" while featuring a ton of celebrity cameos.

I'd say it was the most meta movie I've ever seen, but that slot is still held by The Muppet Movie from 1979. That one has the plot "the Muppets want to make a movie. They wind up making the one you are watching.")
