I'm not surprised if that's in the books, as there's a pretty pervasive cultural idea that wolves are hungry all the time. In reality, they're hunting almost all the time (they do get sluggish after eating--the day after feeding is reliably the most boring day to visit the Wolf Center), but it's surprising how seldom they succeed in killing something.
