Woo metaphors! Part of the thing that fascinates me in general is that in many ways there's no hardware/software separation at all--from what I understand, memories and knowledge change the physical structure of the wiring to at least some extent while they form.

But I love the chemical layer as firmware if we do keep the initial metaphor as it stands.
