I think there's an interesting situation going on with how people use social media right now in terms of promotion because for some people it's about promoting a personality, like say meloukhia The Personality, whereas for other people it's more about promoting work in general and trying to build a career based on work, rather than just on 'I am awesome and you all should love me.' I think that personality thing can backfire in a lot of ugly ways. (And of course in the 'social justice' community there's all kinds of entangled stuff going on that opens up an entirely new can of worms, like 'should people be paid for writing about lived experiences that aren't theirs when there are writers with those experiences available who aren't getting work because it's possible to turn to 'safe' people to write about those experiences?')
